Before and After – Our little fixer upper

August 20, 2013

We spent the past few weekends working on the house and we are finally getting to a point that I feel like we’re almost done. And I realized I have yet to share any “before” photos with you. Here’s a few of our upstairs common areas.

and “after”

A few things we did:
  • Ripped up the carpet
  • Took down the plaster
  • Put up drywall
  • Leveled the house
  • Re-wired
  • Bumped out the kitchen two feet
  • Sanded and sealed the wood floors
  • Added a pass-through to the kitchen
  • Moved the kitchen entryway
  • Insulated

A few things that we weren’t able to do:

  • Save ALL the molding – we were able to salvage enough to wrap the doorways, but lost the beautiful picture rail and pass through molding. Once more of the larger projects are completed we’ll look at adding this back in the coming years
  • Salvage the fireplace – this was a huge heartbreaker. The original plan was to repair it, but after leveling the house it became a safety hazard. And with our splurges in other areas of the house we couldn’t afford to rebuild.

What do you think? I think it’s far from “finished” but we have come a long way. We’re working on furnishing and decorating at the moment. Way more fun than demo and construction! If you have any questions or posts you’d like on our fixer upper adventure – feel free to suggest in the comments!

My goodness, I'm amazing at how quickly the hardwood floors dressed it right up! There seems to be so much for space and light, too. What a fun project! Sorry that you guys weren't able to save the fireplace. From the looks of that one photo, it had a great vintage charm to it.

Wow… this looks incredible. Well done! I'd love to tear out the carpet in my house and put in hardwood floors.

    Cool blog!

It looks amazing. I love hardwood floors. It is so cool how hardwood floors can completely transform a room.

I’m really amazed with your posting skills as well as with the layout on your blog site. Is this a paid style or did you modify it yourself? Either way keep up the pleasant quality writing, it is rare to see a great site such as this one these days.
