Last week I was lucky enough to attend Eco Fashion Week where dozens of designers came together to show the world what sustainable fashion looks like. And it looks pretty darn good. The final show for the week was by Value Village. According to Value Village, every person throws away 81lbs of clothes every year. (Seriously, how does that happen?!) To show what 81lbs looks like, Value Village challenged 10 stylists and designers to style or design garments that equaled 8.1 lbs (making the whole show come in at 81lbs). Participating designers and stylists included Fair Weathers, Boho Republic, Recycle Runway, KLÄD by Melanie Trygg, House of 1000 Corsets, Jason Pillay, Tannya Bernadette, Marky Mark Style, Label Deficiency and Heidi Valencia. What resulted was some ridiculously creative, awesome ensembles.
I challenge you to think outside of the big box store. Donate your clothes, resell your clothes, but do not throw them away. You never know how someone else might be able to use them. Take a moment to browse your local thrift store, you may be surprised by the treasures you find!
